Increasing licensing fees and the state's gas tax could generate $17 million for South Dakota roads.

By Associated Press

Governor. Mike Rounds says he supports the South Dakota Legislature's efforts to find more money for roads and
bridges as long as lawmakers include more revenue for both the state and local governments.

The Senate Transportation Committee has endorsed a bill that would raise the state gas tax by 3 cents a gallon to provide about
$17 million for maintenance work. Lawmakers also are looking at boosting annual vehicle registration fees to provide about the same amount of money for counties.

Senator Mike Vehle of Mitchell says the state and local governments need money for maintenance.

How can you consider raising gas tax and license fees when salaries have been cut or frozen and jobs eliminated. Folks on a fixed income cannot withstand much more. Utilites, groceries etc are all rising in cost. Sooner or later there has to be relief. Help, we cannot take much more.
