Deputy Chad Mechels was a five year law enforcement veteran. Prior to Turner County he also served in Lake and Kingsbury counties. He now leaves behind a wife and two young children.

The shooting took place near Marion around 9:00 a.m. Sunday after mechels responded to a call requesting a "well-being" check. Within three hours, 19 year old Ethan Johns identified himself as the shooter, and turned himself in to the Minnehaha County Law Enforcement Center where he is being held this morning.

John faces first degree murder charges for the death of Deputy Mechels. The impact of the shooting has already been felt by many. "It's a sad day for law enforcement in South Dakota and a reminder of the dangers our officers face even in the rural areas," said Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead We expect the alleged shooter, Ethan Johns, to appear in court this afternoon.  Stay with us at KSFY.com for more updates and details as they become available.
