Grocery Stores Flourish In Recession

We have to eat. It's no secret.  That basic need of life, combined with the gorwing disinterest in dining out, may be the cause for a spike in grocery shopping. According to Hy-Vee store director Kristi Masterson, that's partially true. "What we're seeing is that our restaurants are a little bit busier and that's because it doesn't include a tip. So they're still kind of eating out."

Cost of product had grocery stores worried about dwindling profit margins, that hasn't been a real big problem lately for a couple reasons. "By buying in large quantities or private label, we're finding that we can still provide deals and meet the needs of our shoppers," says Masterson.  Its something she says is to meet the customer's needs. "Hy-Vee's committment that we have right now is making our customers lives easier, healthier and happier. We truly believe that's what our involvement with the community is."

No matter where our economy stands, one thing appears to be certain; grocery stores will always be just fine. "The good news is; everyone has to eat," adds Masterson.
