Heavy rain Sunday night and Monday has added to the flooding on many roads in northeastern South Dakota.

Hamlin County Emergency Management Director Dave Schafer says 3 inches to 5 inches of rain fell in the Lake Poinsettand Estelline areas and nearly 3 inches fell in the Hazel area.

Schafer says the town of Dempster was the scene of a voluntary evacuation Monday morning, along with some farm homes north of Estelline. He says many are roads, especially township roads, are washed out.

The weather service says parts of Highway 81 north of Arlington and Highway 14 west of Arlington are under water due to 4 inches of rain.

Codington County Emergency Management Director Him Sutton says the Big Sioux River didn't rise as much as expected at Watertown and that it should crest overnight just below flood stage.
