Flood Preps Help Arlington

The town of Hetland, South Dakota received 5.9 inches of rain in the storm that passed through, blocking off the road north into town.

Meanwhile just a few miles east in Arlington the mayor Amiel Red Fish said that they received 4 inches of rain.

That's an amount that a few years back would have caused a lot of concern.

"We've been working on our infrastructure the last few years with our drainage problems and we had 4 inches of rain. We haven't had that much for several years and some of our projects that were completed got their test last night and they passed with flying colors," Amiel Red Fish said.

Kingsbury County worker Cliff Poppen was working on closing down the road into Hetland and says a lot of the danger from this much water comes at night, and that's what they're preparing for.

"During the day like here you know, they can see it all the way from here but you don't see that at night until you're right there and if you're driving 50 mph by the time you see it, you're in it," Cliff Poppen said.

In Arlington, the citizens are in a good mood because they're investment has payed off.

"We're preparing for the 50 year and 100 year rain and so far we passed that test. I know we've had a couple citizens call this morning and say it worked," Amiel Red Fish said.
