Hetland Residents Deal With Flooding

By Chuck Harmer

Hetland resident Dale Stricker says Sunday evening, "It was raining hard, real hard and the sump pump was taking off every minute and I thought each troft is full running over in the basement or something has happened and I laid awake all night because every minute the sump pump would take off."  Dale has lived in the small town of Hetland for nearly 50 years and got up at 6 a.m. to find quite a surprise. He says, "I went out and looked at the rain gauge and low and behold, it holds 6 inches and it had 5.9 in it. Well then I knew what the trouble was during the night."

Response to the storm began for Kingsbury County worker Cliff Poppen and his team at 7 a.m. But the real work has been ready for some time. Cliff says, "We had our signs all made up and our flags all made up and equipment ready in case it did. We just didn't figure it would happen this fast."

It did happen that fast, which meant that Dale's morning included a road trip around town. He says, "It was raining hard yeah, and I got up this morning and went down to what we call Lake Olie. It's down here on the road coming into town. I drove part way down and I had to take a look and water was going across the road, so we had an awful lot of rain."
