Suffering From Rare Diabetes

By Dawn Crawley

"It worked on me and I started crying. It was a miracle. They always told me you would never see the day when you get off insulin."

Monogenic diabetes is caused by a mutation in a gene and the drug glyburide actually reverses the mutation in some cases.

"I just thought I would never see it. It's going two straight months with no insulin. I couldn't be happier. My life couldn't be better. I'm healing up."

Healing without being dependent on shots.

"I would take the pills any day over the insulin. Any day."

Insulins, monitors, syringes. Tricia and her daughters used to have to take these products everywhere because of a rare form of diabetes. Now, they just have to take a pill. Tricia says it's their miracle.

Battling the disease for 33 years has made Tricia angry at times.

"It was like "Why did God choose me for this?" I just could never understand why. It was like me I have to be on this diet and take this medication as long as I live."

That's what Tricia thought until she heard about a University of Chicago study for diabetes. Tricia took a saliva test and was instructed to take four glyburide pills daily.

After one week there were major changes.
