Water Flowing Over Dikes

By Dawn Crawley

Flood waters from the James River are well above flood stage, and a rainy forecast means the water could completely surround the town of Columbia.

The road going into Columbia from the south is the only way you can get into Columbia right now. That's because the other roads are underwater and closed. The water is rapidly approaching on this road and that's a concern for residents.

"Well one of them is broke out I guess."

John Smalley and other resident in Columbia are talking about the dikes around town. A lot of water is running over the dikes but emergency management says they are not broken or breached.

"Never has been water on this road in this area. This is a new one for Columbia."

It's also different to see all the fish floating across the road.

"It's entertaining. I come down and watch the shark, I guess there carp cross the road."

With all the roads closed except one some have opted for different transportation.

"These people that live out here on this corner they have a hard time getting to town now. I noticed one of them came in with a new argo because it's the only way you can get around."

That's why residents hope the water doesn't get any higher.
