The SDDH is investigating two cases of swine flu in South Dakota. The samples are on their way to the state health laboratory and initial results are expected Tuesday.
On Sunday, April 26, a total of 20 cases had been confirmed in five states and more are expected as the situation is evolving daily.
“A new virus like this is cause for concern,” said Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth. “The best thing people can do right now is stay informed and practice the same common sense hygiene measures we promote every flu season. Washing your hands often, covering your coughs and sneezes, and staying home when you’re sick are simple steps but they are very effective in stopping the spread of the flu.”
Hollingsworth said the department is monitoring the national situation and is in daily contact with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other states. The department is asking all health care providers to submit all influenza A cases to it’s state health laboratory for initial sub-typing. Final determination of swine flu will be made by CDC.
She noted that the department, health care providers, and community planning groups have been planning for the possibility of a flu pandemic since 2005. The department and its partners have conducted mass immunization exercises, determined hospital bed and surge capacity, and stockpiled medical supplies.
Seasonal influenza continues in South Dakota even though it has slowed significantly in April. The department recommends that people with mild illness stay home and be on the watch for warning signs of more severe illness and the need to seek medical care.
