Smoking Ban Opponents Get Petition Sgnatures

By Associated Press

People upset with the Legislature's ecision to strengthen South Dakota's smoking ban say a surprising number of non-smokers are signing their petition that could put the ban to a statewide vote.

The law, which would force smokers to step outside casinos, bars
and video lottery establishments if they want to light up, takes
effect July 1 unless 16,776 valid petition signatures are gathered
by June 29.

Larry Mann, who represents the Video Lottery Establishments of
South Dakota, says it's too early to estimate the number of
signatures collected but that the process is going well.

Craig Youngstrom of Jackpot Gamblin' in Mitchell says most customers who are asked say they are interested in signing the petition - including non-smokers.

People that say people who smoke are giving them selves cancer well what about drinking?? umm maybe liver cancer. I agree with the nonsmoking in bars, rest, casinos. I hate being in a smoke filled place and I do smoke myself but don't say we are killing ourselves that is wrong. there are tons of ways to kill you self so next time you take a drink of booze remember you are killing youself too.

should make a quality air act and make owners put in expensive air filtration system that would recycle the air ever minute. then they can choose to be smoking or nonsmoking. and all offenders liquor licenses should be taken away and see why people really go to bars. its not just to smoke

It was said that what ever side that the governor did not choose would want a vote so this is not a surprise. But what is that there are non smokers who are not in favor of the ban. Some think we need more government rules and some don't. Could there be a compromise that would be acceptable to both sides.
