Cattle Herds Smaller Due To Rising Costs

Some South Dakota cattlemen have filed a lawsuit to keep older Canadian cows out of the United States.

Many South Dakota cattle raisers are managing smaller herds these days, and industry officials say high costs are one reason.

Marshall County Extension educator Tyler Melroe said figures from earlier in the year show the number of beef cattle cows and heifers for replacement were down 2 percent both in South Dakota and nationwide. And the number of cattle on feed nationwide at the start of the year was down 7 percent from 2008.

Melroe says lower overall numbers are due to higher feed costs, higher pasture rental rates and higher input costs.

Still, grocers say they have not noticed any less beef being sold.
