Post Offices Closes, Town Mad

Claremont has had a Post Office ever since they have been a town, nearly 125 years. Now the post office is closed and that's causing problems for businesses, farmers, and the elderly.

All of these people standing in front of what used to be the Post Office are upset because it's closed and they do not want to drive further to another post office.

"I'm not able to get around very well. So I don't care to drive that far all the time," says Darlene McCarlson.

The Post Office closed the building saying it needed a new furnace and that there were mold issues but people in town do not feel there was sufficient notice. Former Postmaster Judy Pierson would like to see the post office reopened.

"The letter from the past landlord was not read until the actual closure meeting on December 29th. The Post Office either would not or could not share that information with us."

A Post Office representative says that there are other Post Offices within 10 miles. Amherst, a neighboring town is within 10 miles but that Post Office is only open for two hours per day.

Banker Martin Micko in Claremont is not comfortable with mailboxes outside.

"We have a lot of notices, interest checks, we are worried about security."

Farmers want to be able to get their supplies at the beginning of the day. Dale Kurth appreciated the hours kept by the Post Office.

"If we need parts usually they came in the mail and we could run in and pick them up early in the morning before they went out on the route."

I think we are going to see more and more of this. The post office just isn't making any money anymore.

I'm mad because the person who wrote the headline for this story still has a job! I guess it's hard to find good helps these days!

I'm sure a banker could afford the little extra cost of the carrier service to come inside for a pick-up. How do you think other businesses do it? And if you need parts quicker or at a certain time there are services like Fedex and UPS

Nobody wants to buy stamps and mail letters. They just want the free delivery to their door 6 days a week. Maybe they should see if someone 'online' can deliver to them. You get what you pay for.

Your rural carrier can handle whatever you need. They are also authorized to enter businesses to deliver the mail at a specific location, deliver and pick up packages, sell stamps, money orders, Etc. That is why your rural carrier is called a POST OFFICE ON WHEELS.
