Memorial To A War Hero

Master Sergeant Keeble was born in Waubay and lived in Wahpeton, North Dakota where he enlisted in the military.

At today's ceremony veterans recounted stories of Keeble's bravery back in 1951. During the Korean War, American troops were not able to advance because men at four enemy pillboxes were firing machine guns.

Keeble charged up the hill and threw grenades into the enemy pillboxes. After the battle 83 pieces of grenade fragment were removed from Keeble's body. Keeble died in 1982 and was awarded a congressional medal of honor in 2008 by President Bush. Today Governor Rounds said he wished he had been able to meet him.

"There are many gifts that a person can give another person but nothing is more precious than freedom, a gift that Woodrow Wilson Keeble and his fellow vets have given to all the world."

Keeble was highly decorated with over 30 medals and awards.
