Soybean Cyst Nematode Continues to Spread in SD

A plant pathologist at South Dakota State University says four more counties have tested positive for the soybean cyst nematode.

Larry Osborne says soil samples from Charles Mix, Kingsbury, Codington and McPherson counties tested positive for the pest for the first time in 2008.

The pest was first found in Union County in 1995. The nematode also has been confirmed in 20 other eastern South Dakota counties.

Osborne says the pest can be spread by tires, shoes and farm equipment.

The tiny roundworm, just 1/64th of an inch long, can suck away nutrients and stifle the soybean plant's ability to produce beans.
