A man died this weekend after he was thrown from a boat when it hit a submerged tree on Saturday afternoon. It happened on Cattail Lake in Marshall County near Fort Sisseton State Park.
Investigators say 65 year old Robert Musil, Senior of Omaha, Nebraska died despite the efforts of nearby rescuers.
The incident happened at Cattail Lake, a very popular spot for fishing but on Saturday other boaters had to come to the rescue as two men went overboard.
Robert Musil Sr. and his brother Tom were fishing when their boat hit a submerged log. Both men were propelled into Cattail Lake. Bob Honomichl watched this happen from his boat.
"We could hear someone yelling for help. We got over there and helped Tom out of the water and he was holding on to a log, we got him into the boat and he was yelling to help his brother, we looked around and my cousin spotted his brother floating face down in the water."
Bob performed CPR on Robert but it was too late. For those going fishing today, like Harlan Satrange, the stumps sticking out of the water serve as a warning and what is unseen could be worse.
"Logs, if you hit them at speed especially they are really a problem. They'll tear up your boat and maybe throw you overboard. You cannot see every stump that's out here, especially because the water is a little higher than normal."
Those who rushed to help as two men fought for their lives say it's something etched in their minds forever.
"I never dealt with anything like that and it's just something I would hope someone would do for us. We went over there and did the best we could."
Neither of the two men who were ejected from the boat were wearing life jackets. The Sheriff's Office and Game, Fish, and Parks responded to the incident.
