The Dangers Of Summer And Young Drivers

Incidents like the one in Pierre are reminders of how important safety should be to teenage drivers and has safety experts asking you to talk to your kids tonight.

For a lot of young drivers, summer fun means hitting the road with your friends. However, that fun can disappear in an instant with one moment of bad judgment.

Sgt. Galen Smidt with the Sioux Falls Police Department says "when they get their friends in the car, 2, 3, 4, 5 other kids with them, the chance of distractions increases a lot"

Part of Sergeant Smidt's job is to educate young drivers about the dangers of the road. One specific part of his presentation deals with having too many friends in a car at once.

There were eight people in the jeep in the Fort Pierre accident.

It's a scenario we've heard before but Galen Smidt hopes his work, along with the help of parents and some positive peer pressure can lead to a decrease in fatal accidents when teens are behind the wheel.

Police caution that you shouldn't assume your young driver realizes the risk a lot of friends in the car can have and you should talk to them before getting in the car.

My condolences go out to the family. Our town just had to deal with the loss of a 16yr old boy last week. Hopefully all these horrible accidents will make kids think twice when they get behind the wheel.
