Sioux Falls is adopting a new flood insurance map and as a result, some people who've never lived in a flood plain before, now do.
Now, they must decide whether they want to buy flood insurance.
KSFY Action News spoke with many residents near 12th and Kiwanis and specifically some that are near 10th and Holly. They said they were not pleased with the decision on the new flood plain, mostly for the raise in insurance costs.
The people I spoke with today didn't want to appear on camera but the biggest reason for being upset was the rise in insurance rates.
One man even mentioned that he didn't see the need for the change, since in the nearly 50 years he's lived there, he's never had a problem with flooding.
The assistant director of city planning for the City of Sioux Falls told me today that this wasn't the city's decision. FEMA was required by congress to update the map so FEMA is making the determination for the City of Sioux Falls.
The rezoning of the flood plain will add around 1800 buildings to the flood plain, an increase of over 200%.
For some, the headaches aren't only over insurance. We spoke with one property owner who just bought a lot in the new flood plain and was going to build a duplex on it, but the base of that home would have to be nearly 6 feet off the ground. John Rettedal has a duplex and another rental on the same street. He was actually going to tear down the rental at one point, but decided not to because the new laws "wouldn't allow him to do it the right way"
Interestingly, much of this will be undone. Right now the levee's protecting Sioux Falls aren't included in FEMA's assessment, but when the new levee project is complete, the flood plain will once again shrink.
