Menno Residents Pull Together To Clean Up From Wind Storm

Just over 700 people live in the Hutchinson County community of Menno. About 8:30 Tuesday night high winds and hail hit the town and in it's wake there was a lot of tree damage and some damage to homes.

Tom Sattler, a Menno resident, said, "I grabbed the boys and the wife and I went down in our little cellar."

The national weather service says the storm spawned a tornado in the Menno area.

Don Okrina, another Menno resident, said, "We had one 4 or 5 years ago. It wasn't this severe but it took down a lot of trees on the west side of town."

The storm was a trip back in time for Don Okrina, who says the image of downed trees all across Menno is leading to the same response from five years ago: people coming together to help.

Don said, "Everyone is trying to help everybody get cleaned up again."

Farmers near town came in with their tractors, working to pull debris out of neighborhoods and down to the town dump.

One of those trees fell in the front yard of Clarence Simonsen.

Clarence said, "I sat down to watch TV and the house just shook. I thought it was bad thunder is what I thought it was."
