Fighting Domestic Violence

By Jim Nelson

To raise awareness of domestic violence, Children's Inn of Sioux Falls is urging us to read the book, Crazy Love this summer.

Inn it to End It is a novel approach to promote a community-based effort to read the book Crazy Love. From there, Children's Inn will host six different discussions where community members can talk about the book's content. It's just one step the organization is taking to end domestic violence.

The book is just one woman's account of her life as an abuse victim.

According to Development Coordinator Staci Kruepenske of Children's Inn, all readers should be able to connect with the book. "And for those that are in that situation, it also shows them; first of all they're not alone. Secondly, it kind of shows them you can get out. You can start over, you can be successful."

Getting victims of abuse to understand that can be a tough task. Connecting with them may take time. For that reason, Kruepenske says you have to find some sort of silver lining. "You really have to find the successes in this line of work and they carry you very far."

Those successes can be small things like getting a client to come back for help multiple times. The primary goal is to ultimately get them out of abusive situations. "That's really what keeps you going. It's really what keeps you in this line of work, knowing that you're making a difference."

Making a difference for people at a low point in their life. Kruepenske says the best part of her job is the response from the victims when they're treated with respect and dignity.

"To see them flourish in that environment is an incredible feeling."
