Brookings residents who are challenging a County Commission decision to buy land for parking space have turned in petition signatures with nearly 1,300 signatures.

The group wants a public vote on commission plans to raze the two houses on the properties and build a parking lot.

Organizer Gloria Kloster says the group needs only 969 valid signatures to refer the commission's decision to a vote. The Brookings County state's attorney's office is tasked with deciding if the referendum effort is valid.
