A young Watertown girl nearly drowned at the Watertown Family Aquatic Center on Monday afternoon, but she is reportedly doing okay thanks to the work of a lifeguard and a nurse who happened to be at the popular water park.

Watertown recreation superintendent, Terry Kelly, tells KSFY that the young girl was flown to Avera McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls for precautionary reasons. The girl went under water during a busy swimming time at about 3:15 p.m., Tuesday.

Benjamin Outland tells Action News he and his friend Isabelle, were in the pool with the young girl when they noticed something wrong.

"We saw her bobbing up and down and then a glaze of water just came over her and we couldn't see her and the Isabelle went to go see if she was okay and then she said go get a life guard."

Benjamin Outland says a lifeguard acted quickly bringing the girl to edge of the pool. The girl was unresponsive at the time, but an off-duty nurse quickly performed CPR. The young girl was reportedly breathing and conscious by the time paramedics arrived.

"I was praying that she'd be okay and I just hope she's okay right now," Outland says.

Watertown's recreation superintendent, Terry Kelly, tells Action News he has spoken to the family and says the girl is doing better. he declined an on-camera interview about the efforts of the lifeguard saying the event is simply a "reflection of the skilled staff, and an indication of the initial and constant training all staff receive".

OMG!!little boy said lifegaurd is the one that got her to the side of the pool so they could pull her out. You people nit pick so much, just be thankful that the girl is ok, and I think the pool has wonderful employees that do a great job keeping watch over our kids

Yes it is important that the girl is fine but do you really want to take your kids to a pool where the lifeguards can't do their job?

omg, who cares who did what. The girl is fine, that is the only thing that matters.

I was also there and it was NOT the lifeguard that pulled her from the water. It's kind of sad that they are not recognizing the people who really did save this girl, the real people who pulled her from the water and those that did recussitation. Thank you to those brave people.

Just on update on this, the little girl was released from the sioux falls hospital and is doing fine. As a side note the lifeguard did not pull the child from the pull. My friend and I were the ones that noticed her and we brought her to the side. I want to say thank you to the off duty nurse that rushed to help us. Thank you and God was truely at the pool on Monday.

As a lifeguard at the Watertown Family Aquatic Center, it is nice to see and hear the support given to us by our community after something like this takes place. An incident like this keeps us lifeguards on our toes and reminds us why we are there doing what we do!

I am grateful to see this story. I was there and it was horrible. I am so glad to get some closure and hear the girl is doing OK. From what I saw, there were some amazing moms there who acted quickly and made all the difference. Thank you to those women! And thank you to KSFY for carrying the story...unlike the local media.
