Garretson Man Gets 1 Year for Stealing Mail

A 36-year-old Garretson man who worked for a company that contracted with the U.S. Postal Service is going to prison for stealing mail.

Michael Dallas Andersen was sentenced to one year in custody and
ordered to pay more than $2,600 in restitution.

He was indicted on seven counts but pleaded guilty to obstruction of correspondence in federal court in Sioux Falls.

According to court documents, he stole the mail while working for a private business that contracted with the Postal Service to transport mail from a processing center in Sioux Falls to the airport.

Prosecutors said that between August 2006 and August 2008,
Andersen took thousands of pieces of mail that included gift cards,
endorsed checks and DVDs.
