After Nebraska Stop, Runners Head for Wyo., Mont., and SDDozens of runners will head toward Wyoming for their next stop on the 27th annual Sacred Hoop Run. Organizers say more than 300 people are taking part, including about two dozen traveling all 500 miles. The runners carry eagle staffs that symbolize prayers asking that American Indians can live free of alcohol and drugs. Organizers say the trip began Monday at Bear Butte in South Dakota. Tuesday's destination was Whiteclay, Neb. There are four beer stores in Whiteclay, which is within walking distance of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The stores sell thousands of cans of beer daily, mostly to residents of the reservation. The runners head for Wyoming on Wednesday, then Montana on Thursday before heading back to Bear Butte. © 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
