Huge Hail Storms Leave Mess To Clean Up In Sanborn County

Huge bolts of lighting lit up the sky for hours in Sioux Falls as weather warnings popped up all over the area. Great video from viewers came in from the Emery, S.D. which looked like a funnel cloud heading toward the ground. Another came in from the Letcher area showing more low hanging clouds.

Most of the damage reports weren't necessarily from the wind or possible tornadoes but from hail. It appears as though Sanborn County got it the worst. There was basically a 12 mile stretch of hail damage and that included everything from egg-sized hail to some reports of tennis ball sized.

KSFY was in Sanborn County today, near the town of Artesian, where even the sheriff said he got caught in the storm.

Sheriff Tom Fridley saved some of the hail that he and a deputy encountered while they were storm spotting. Fridley was trying to verify a tornado report, when he says he was surprised by the hail.

He says the hail did damage to many homes, crops, and even his patrol car.
