County Bounty On Gophers Doubled

Tools

Gophers, which harm electrical lines, telephone lines, livestock yards and cause other damage, have become a bit more endangered in Brookings County.

The county commission has raised the bounty on the furry brown creatures from $1 to $2. The county's weed and pest board recommended the action.

Townships and two utility companies are sharing the cost of the bounties with the county. The bounty program has cost the county about $4,000 since it began in 2003.

Commissioner Dennis Falken says the doubled bounty might give gopher hunters more incentive.
