DWI Enforcement In South Dakota

By Jim Nelson

It's never easy to talk about fatalities caused by drunk drivers. But what makes it even tougher, is that nearly all of them can be prevented.

So often, we hear the grim reminders of what alcohol can do when its mixed with driving. For family members, the pain never goes away. Unfortunately, someone close to them does. "If someone dies in a crash, someone is no longer in the picture of that family," says Captain Kevin Joffer of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

For him, those are always tough situations. As we head into the 4th of July weekend, his department is concerned. "There will be a lot of people on the road. Drinking and driving is probably one of the number one things that we try to combat."

For good reason. Over the last five years, the weekend has generated 600 car crashes, killing 16. Many of them are alcohol related. That's why Joffer says its crucial to use common sense on the roads this weekend..

"If its even a question in your mind, whether you should or shouldn't drive, its probably best to not drive. Use a designated driver."

Joffer also adds that its important to use precautions even if you're not planning on drinking this weekend, as you simply cannot control what other motorist do.
