Palin To Resign As Alaska Governor

"So i choose, for my state and my family, more freedom to progress all the way around. So that Alaska may progress, I will not seek re-election as governor." That was just the start of the political fireworks that surprised the country earlier today. In addition to not seeking re-election, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska announced that she will resign her post on July 26th.

The surprise announcement left many people stunned, including many of you here in our area.
More on that in a minute, but first, here's what we know tonight.

In a surprise press conference from her home in Wasilla...Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said she will not seek a second term as governor and she will resign on Kuly 26th - transfering power to Alaska's Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell. "I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is unconventional and it is not so comfortable. With this announcement that I am not seeking re-election, I have determined it is best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell."

Standing by her family and state commissioners, Palin didn't answer any questions or give any specific reason for stepping down. In the past, Palin has hinted a 2012 presidential bid may be in her future. She didn't mention her future plans today.

She came to national prominence last Summer when Senator John McCain chose her to be his vice-presidential running mate on the Republican ticket. Palin quickly became a political lightning rod, loved by conservatives, lampooned by critics. "I really don't want to disappoint anyone with this announcement, not with the decision that I have made. All I can ask is that you trust me with this decision and know that it is no more politics as usual."

Tonight, Governor Palin's successor, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, declined to speak on camera regarding the announcement.
But he did address his upcoming promotion in a lengthy statement to Alaskans.

In an excerpt, he said quote, "I thank her for the confidence she's placed in me, for her trust, and for her friendship. As Alaska celebrates her 50th year of statehood, I believe history will look back on Sarah Palin as one of Alaska's great gifts to all peoples."

Parnell says he plans to keep nearly all of Palin's staff, and his main priority is securing a gas line for the state.
