Report: 1 in 6 SD Children Fighting Poverty

Tools

A new report from Voices for Children, a Sioux Falls-based advocacy group, says 33,000 people age 18 and under in South Dakota live below the federal poverty line of $21,027 for a family of four.

That's 17 percent, or approximately one in every six South Dakota children. It's almost the same percentage as 10 years ago.

And the report says almost half of them -- 16,000 -- live in extreme poverty as defined by a household income less than $10,514 for a family of four.

Economic security, housing, health and nutrition, education and public will were listed in the report as areas to be addressed.

Children's advocates say state and federal guidelines should be adjusted to better address the needs of children and families.
