Smoking Ban Petition Update

Three employees with the secretary of state's office in Pierre on Monday started the task of reviewing nearly ten thousand disputed signatures on the petition to bring South Dakota's smoking ban to a public vote.

That petition had already been certified by the office after a review of thirteen hundred names.

Monday night, Secretary of State Chris Nelson tells Action News his office has nothing to hide.

"The important thing for people to understand is this is a process that is very open, both sides can evaluate what's being done, can evaluate what my staff is doing and it's all an open and public record."

Nelson isn't making any predictions on how long the review will take.
