A Monday night turned sour for one Sioux Falls family, who's home was badly burned by a fire.

At around eight o'clock, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was called to a home at the intersection of 7th and Jessica on the city's eastside.

According to Battalion Chief Joe Sieverding, the fire started in the dining room and spread from there. Luckily, no one was inside at the time and when neighbors saw smoke pouring out of the house, they called 911.

The American Red Cross was on the scene offering assistance to the people who live in the home. It is unclear right now if the residents will have to seek shelter or not.

Firefighters will stay on the scene throughout the evening to make sure no "hot spots" flare up in the home. Fire investigators were also expected to arrive at the scene tonight to begin determining the cause of the fire.
