A one year old boy from Sioux Center, Iowa is in a Sioux Falls hospital tonight, fighting a rare disease that may be linked to E. coli.
You may remember a big E. coli scare that recalled thousands of pounds of beef out of Colorado. We do not know for sure tonight, but there's a possibility that this boys illness could be linked to E. coli and even to the Colorado cases.
Isaiah Romero is here at Sanford Childrens' Hospital with what's called Hemolytic uremic syndrome or HUS. His dad told Action News today that Isaiah is normally an active kid, but this has slown him down and their time in the hospital has been heart-wrenching saying "you never think you're going to see your child in the hospital and the reality of it is, is that it can happen to anyone."
A few weeks ago Isaiah started with basic diarrhea, then vomiting. There was an E. coli test done, but it came back negative. He developed HUS this past weekend, which commonly forms from E. coli. While not every child that gets E. coli, also gets HUS, there is a small percentage that does. It attacks the red blood cells in the body and that leads to kidney failure. Isaiah has been on dialysis and had a number of other tests done to track his progress.
Seeing his son like that isn't easy for Isaiah's Dad, but he's tells us he's going to get by. He told us "It's hard on us, but with God's help we're doing ok"
