Horse Case Investigated in SD

Tools

Authorities in Stanley County are investigating the theft and apparent abuse of a successful rodeo barrel-racing horse.

Sheriff Brad Rathbun says the horse owned by rodeo competitor Wendy Halweg of Mitchell was taken from the County Fairgrounds
Sunday morning, after it had competed in the Fort Pierre Rodeo during the Fourth of July.

The horse was later found injured and confined to a tree near a home in Fort Pierre. The horse named Dually is being treated by a veterinarian. Halweg says it might never compete again.

The South Dakota Rodeo Association has offered a reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Rathbun says there are at least two suspects, but no arrests have been made.

Well you know how it goes money talks. Wonder how much it took to get the SA to look the other way. If he does not file charges and arrest the guilty person(s) then he is just as guilty of the crime.

Like Wendy my Jetson is my child. My heart goes out to her and Dually and I have been thinking of them everyday since it hit the news Dually was hurt the way he was. You are both in prayers. I can only hope for "cowboy" justice since the law will never make those guys pay for their crimes in the manor they should.

this is crazy...in www.todayskccr.com the state's attorney has quoted that no decision have been made yet on what type of charge if any will be filed(WHAT?) Tom P. Maher is "not Satisfied" that the investigation is finished and he has asked that the stanley co. sheriff for more information. If they have given the state attorney there information why not an arres. All I have to say the guilty parties involved must have a little money and that is why they aren't being arrested.

Have any of you looked up the State of South Dakota's animal cruelty laws, well guess what, it has a max fine of $1000.00 and or up to 1 year in jail, that is on the internet for all to read and learn our laws. You and I and everyone in this State should march upon Pierre and demand that animal cruelty be a felony, I have, but I did not see most of you there, until you are willing to change the law, you should keep your mouth shut and read our State Laws.

What makes this srory even more horrible is that more than one person took pleasure in this act. This crime should be a felony!! Too sick and twisted to happen in my home state.

Friday, Jul 10 at 8:50 PM Aberdeen, SD. wrote ...

Arn't there any cowboys left in Pierre? The cowboys I know would find out real quick who these idiots are and treat them the same way Dually was treated. If Casey Tibbs were alive there would be some idiots beaten and hauled into jail. God Gless Dually and Wendy and to a successful recovery . Lets go Cowboys in Pierre!!!

First it's a horse, next a child or elderly person. What some people don't get is that rarely does the abuse stop with animals. It's not that someone has something against an animal, it's that they feel power over an innocent. Animal or human doesn't really matter to them. The sooner we figure this out the safer we'll all be.

How can anyone do such a crime to animals. I do not rodeo but have been to some of them and have seen the love and care these cowboys/cowgirls give their animals. Even after tying a goat the ladies will help it get up and like wise for the calves. I have seen cowboys tip their hats to horses who just bucked them off. There is a respect that is given to all the animals at a rodeo. Best wishes for Dually and justice needs to be done. I'm sure Dually is under the best care right now.

To the anonymous poster about exploiting the animals. Do you realize that all animals that compete in the sport get better care and food than most? Looking in my pasture my horses stand with fly masks and fly sheets they are also sprayed with mosquito spray, while i run around without! What i am saying is these animals get taken better care of then most. Drive around the countryside & see the 10 horses on 2acres of pasture and are starving because no one is there taking care of them!

Right. That is all I can think of is Dually and Wendy. This unbelievable act needs to get national attention. Maybe then SD will make animal abuse a felony. These people must be Satan's demons.

Thursday, Jul 9 at 6:52 PM Justice wrote ...

This is for Wendy and for Dually, that innocent defenseless best friend that Wendy ever had. SD's #1 sport of Rodeo will be forever sickened if this goes without justice. The people responsible are not children they are adults. This is an unconscionable act of brutality and torture. Every day they should live the pain they inflicted on innocent Dually who trusted people and was treated as a family member by Wendy. My thoughts and prayers are with you every hour Wendy and Dually.

I agree with the last poster-rodeos do exploit animals. At the same time I know there are many people in the rodeo business such as Wendy and others that really love their animals. That poor, helpless horse-what horror he had to endure. Those things that did this-what I and many others would like to do to you. May you rot in hell.

Rodeo is a sport that exploits animals for the entertainment or financial gain of humans.

Thursday, Jul 9 at 4:58 PM shed some light wrote ...

To Anonymous, Rodeo is not a sport that is riddled with animal abuse. Every animal in the sport from the little goat, to the priceless horse, to the raging bulls are priceless. These animals are insured for hundreds of thousands of dollars, they are not just disposable animals that are not cared for. If a member of your livestock is injured you are losing money, they are most often very well cared for animals.

Yes this is a horse that this happened to. It does not matter that it is a horse, cat, dog, child, adult. It should have never happened. I hate to hear that people think just becase it was an animal it doesn't matter. Most serial killers started out tourchering and abusing difensless animals. So to most yes it was a horse but who will these people target next your child? So next time you want to sa it is just an animal think b4 you speak. Pictures are not available due to pending investigation.

Growing up with horses and animals, my heart goes out to you Wendy. I heard about this from friends and family up north, I'm in Louisiana, and it is disgusting to think that anyone, let alone someone who is in the circuit themselves could do something like this. Our pets are family and whether this happens to a person, or a defensless animal it is wrong! Family is family, and no one can tell us differently!

Thursday, Jul 9 at 1:02 PM horselover wrote ...

To the anonymous that wrote about rodeo cruelty. Those animals (goats, calves, steers, horses, bulls) are not tortured. Yes they are roped and thrown, but they are rarely injured and they are treated for any injuries if they do occur. There is nothing cruel about American rodeo. It is a sport and those that love it also love the animals that we compete with. Get your facts straight!!This article is about blatent and uncaring cruelty and to a horse. Take your anti-rodeo propaganda elsewhere.

I agree this is a tragedy but how about the hundreds of animals that are abused during that sport called rodeo. That little goat that is thrown and tied, the calf jerked at the end of a rope, the steer that is thrown and stretched, etc...This is also abuse. Don't you believe they experience fear and pain too?

Animal abuse is a much more serious crime than many people realize. Many serial killers started abusing animals before turning to humans. Someone who abuses an animal definitely has some missing screws.

This is a horrible incident that many may not be able to comprehend. There is a special bond between a person and a horse when you spend hours training and cultivating their talent. If someone stole an expensive vehicle and totaled it, it could be replaced, but it may be years and years before Wendy finds a horse of this caliber and talent. The fact of the matter is, what happened to this living, breathing animal is unacceptable and should be punished. Please do not brush this under the rug!
