Trials Set For 11 Charged In Mount Rushmore Crime

Tools

Eleven people accused of scaling Mount Rushmore and hanging a banner warning about global warming are expected to appear in federal court in October for trial.

Trial dates have been set for Oct. 19-20 for the 11 climbers, who are members of the environmental group Greenpeace. They have pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of trespassing and climbing in a prohibited area.

The prosecutor said each charge carries a penalty of up to six months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The group said three of its members hung the 65-by-35-foot banner on the national monument while other activists blocked access to the site.

Security warnings and tourists alerted officials when the banner was unrolled. The banner was removed about an hour after it was unfurled.
