A former Highmore police chief who was convicted last year of murdering his wife is being sued for $1 million by her family.

Nadine Stephenson of Highmore, the sister of Pamela Huber, has filed a wrongful death suit in Hyde County against Ken Huber.

She also seeks the return of property that was owned by Ken Huber, later seized by investigators and then returned to the defendant's family. The property includes two cars, a motorcycle, a snowmobile, work tools, hunting gear and paintings.

Stephenson and her husband, Bob, are the guardians of the Hubers' two minor children.

Ken Huber is serving a life prison sentence without the possibility of parole for killing his wife. Pam Huber was shot once in the forehead on Oct. 28, 2007, as she lay next to one of her daughters on a bed in the family's home in Highmore. She died a few days later in a Sioux Falls hospital. Ken Huber said a gun he was cleaning accidentally discharged.
