14 Animals Taken from Property in Emery, SD

Hanson county authorities conducted an animal rescue Friday afternoon in Emery. Fourteen animals in all were taken from a residence there just after 9:30 a.m. Eight horses, three dogs and three rabbits were taken from the home at 150 Handson Street in Emery.

While the animals were being collected from the residence, the owners interfered with the animal control officers. The two brothers were subsequently arrested. Kenneth and Johnny Backes are both charged with allowing diseased animal to suffer needlessly, inhumane treatment of animals, and obstructing a law enforcement officer. Kenneth Backes is also charged resisting arrest.
