Gravestone Mystery Solved in Humboldt

Tools

A gravestone mystery has been solved in the southeast South Dakota town of Humboldt.

Officials have determined that the gravestone unearthed during a driveway project at the home of Dan and Jodi Jensen did not mark the spot of an actual grave, but was instead a decorative element.

Dan Jensen says he is relieved to learn there is no grave on his property. He says he's also glad that the marker has been returned
to the proper family.

Renee Boen with the South Dakota State Historical Society Archaeological Research Center solved the mystery with the help of
Leighton Hanson of Sioux Falls, grandson of the couple who used to
live in the home.

Boen says the gravestone, with the family's last name of Gengler, had been purchased in the late 1800s to mark the spot where an infant family member was buried in a cemetery near Wall Lake. That never happened, so the marker was instead used in the yard at the Humboldt home.
