Union County Renting Out Jail Space

By KSFY Staff

It's a jail that is more often empty than it is full. The Union County Jail in Elk Point has 52 available beds and not much crime. So as a result, the county rents jail beds to surrounding counties and agencies, such as the Federal Marshall's Service. As we found out, those rental agreements are a fairly lucrative business for Union County.

Sheriff Dan Limoges told Action News, "It definitely offsets the costs that we do have. You know we can pull in anywhere from, probably $200,000 a year. $150 to $200,000 a year off our agreements that we do have."

In addition to housing prisoners for Federal Marshals, Limoges says his jail also routinely holds inmates for Turner County.
