A Harrold man who has racked up eight drunk driving convictions has been sentenced to five years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Four of Gilbert Big Eagle's convictions have been within the last 10 years.

Circuit Judge Lori Wilbur, after being told that the 43-year-old Big Eagle had not completed treatment requirements, said Tuesday that his record shows probation doesn't work for him.

Also in Hughes County court, 46-year-old Maria Kraft of Hoven was sentenced to seven years in prison for her fifth DUI - all in the last 10 years. She was given credit for 214 days she already has served.

Two of Kraft's previous drunk driving arrests occurred on the same day in February 2005.

I went to prison 1m1998 for DUI'S. I was handed a 5yr.sentence, you know what? it was the best thing to have happened to me. i went to treatment three times prior to that, and i still was not ready to stop drinking. people don't understand that the alcholoism needs to be addressede addressed. i finally realized while sitting in prison that i had to deal with my alcoholism. i have been sober for close to 12yrs now!
