Agriculture Loan Mediation Resources Available

The South Dakota Agriculture Department says farmers feeling the effects of the recession can get free financial counseling and agriculture loan mediation services.

In a release, the department says its farm loan mediation program has helped farmers since 1988. State law requires ag lenders to request mediation before taking any legal action on loans for borrowers owing $50,000 or more, but mediation can be used to help resolve disputes on agricultural loans in any amount.

The department also offers a finance counseling program. The release says it can help farmers better understand their situations and make informed decisions. Agriculture counselors provide one-on-one financial management assistance, such as loan paperwork completion and long-term planning.
