Five New H1N1-Related Deaths in South Dakota

Minnehaha County received 300 doses of the H1N1 Vaccine. Emergency responders received their shot Wednesday night.

By Associated Press

The state Health Department has confirmed five more H1N1 flu-related deaths in South Dakota, bringing the total to nine.

Details on where the latest deaths occurred weren't immediately available.

Deaths had previously been reported from Shannon, Todd, Minnehaha and Pennington counties. The latter case involved an 8-year-old boy from Rapid City.

The virus can cause a high fever, body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion, and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea.

Influenza activity remains widespread in South Dakota.

i hadn't done much research on it and was shocked that my son was able to recieve it after going in for his regular flu shot. i fought with myself for about 5 minutes and felt god was telling me to give it to him! and i was also thinking, if its available and my child's dr was advising us to get it, then it must be safe enough. i'd rather be safe then sorry then to have my child sick and on his death bed from this nasty virus! he is fine as can be after receiving it!

I have three children in the Sioux falls public schools. All three of them have received the flu shot. This coming Monday my 4 year old has the opportunity to get the H1N1 shot. I am not sure what to do... Its so new and there is no guarantee that she wont still get the H1N1 virus. With so many children who have already had this virus my children have lucked out.
