400 Million Federal Dollars Aimed At Reducing Violence On Reservations

By KSFY Staff

$400 million dollars will help tribal communities reduce violence on their reservations. That announcement comes from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday.

The cash is coming from the Department of Justice. The grants come after the completion of a two-day listening session in St. Paul, where Department of Justice officials met with over 300 tribal leaders.

The Obama administration sparked the effort wanting to address what Holder says are unacceptably high crime rates on American Indian reservations.

Holder says he is creating a permanent tribal national leadership council that will meet twice a year. He also plans to visit several tribal communities in the next year and beyond to keep tabs on the efforts.
