More Than 1,000 Doses of H1N1 Vaccine Shipped Back to Pierre

Minnehaha County received 300 doses of the H1N1 Vaccine. Emergency responders received their shot Wednesday night.

By KSFY Staff

More than 1,000 doses of H1N1 shots that were intended to be distributed in Sioux Falls last night were shipped back to Pierre.

We're told only 978 vaccines were used at last night's clinic.

The vaccination clinic began as an invitation-only event, but Minnehaha County eventually opened it up to the public because many of you that were invited, didn't come.

Now the leftover vaccine will be distributed at other clinics in the state.

"Basically the doses of vaccine are a federal asset that's controlled by the state of South Dakota so last night after the event we boxed the vaccine boxed up goes back to the state of South Dakota," said Lynn De Young, Minnehaha County Emergency Management.

Because the vaccine went unused here, Minnehaha County is now on the bottom of the list. So it's hard to say when another H1N1 vaccine event will be held here.

I heard nothing about this either!! I have a 4 year old and I am so so so scared that he will get it and I have been waiting for this vaccine to be available! Now I probably will not be able to get him one. Thanks

Why wasn't the vaccine offered to the next high risk group before sending it back? I have a teen with asthma and want to get him vaccinated as soon as possible. When did the vaccine become "public" and how was this information released? It appears to me that De Young and the Minnehaha County Emergency Management team could have done a better job as we are now at the bottom the of vaccine use list.

Was this open to the public..made public? I never heard about it and I would have been there in a heart beat! GRRRRR How about college students who live in dorms...or even off campus..provide it to them then.

Oh that's just great! Hold an inviatation only event to give out this potentially live saving vaccine only to have MORE THAN HALF go unused, then ship the rest AWAY from the pubic clamoring for the vaccine. Well played.
