Girl Hit By Train In Sioux Falls

By KSFY Staff

A nine year old girl was hospitalized in Sioux Falls with non-life-threatening injuries this weekend after she was hit by a train on the southeast side of the city.
Around noon Sunday, a nine year old girl and her friend and a dog were walking on the railroad tracks near 49th Street and Southeastern Avenue. That's when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train came through and an empty grain train struck the girl at 20 mph.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said the engineer was blowing the whistle and applied the emergency brake system prior to the accident but was unable to miss striking the girl.
The girl remains in the hospital this morning with non-life threatening injuries. It is still unclear as to where she was taken but officials at Avera Mckennan this morning say they did not admit a patient involved in a train accident and Sanford Health says that patient information would not be available until later this morning.

If the brakes were applied and the horn blowing, why didn't she move? Why was she on the tracks in the first place? Didn't the other girl see the train? I feel these girls were maybe just being naughty and trying to play around, and it shows you can get hurt when messing around.

Maybe was at a spot where the ditches on eash side were steep or on a trestle? Although article didnt mention that. Or maybe just froze at seeing the train coming??

Why did she not hear the train if it was blowing the whistle? What happened to other girl and dog?
