The two are officially one.

Today the board of trustees for Fargo-based MeritCare approved its merger with Sanford Health here in Sioux Falls.

The merger makes the new Sanford Health-MeritCare the largest not-for-profit rural health care provider in the country.

More than 800 doctors are among the new organization's 17,000-plus employees, which will serve over 2-million people in a six state service area.

Board members say the new Sanford Health-MeritCare will strengthen the region's health care by expanding services, research, education and access to care.
