Avera Careflight Makes Emergency Landing Near Canistota

The helicopter made an emergency landing Monday night after hitting a duck while in flight.

By Brian Allen KSFY

An Avera Careflight helicopter made an emergency landing Monday night in a field near Canistota, after the helicopter struck a duck while in flight.

For several hours on Tuesday, crews worked to get the helicopter out of the field and onto the back of a flat bed truck in order to get it back to Sioux Falls to make repairs.
The emergency landing happened about 1 mile south of the Canistota exit off of Interstate 90.
You can see where the duck smashed through the helo's front window.
The crew was equipped with night vision goggles, which allowed for a safe landing.
Brian Erickson is with Avera Careflight. "They were able to identify some wires and some trees and of course you know around the county there's a lot of water standing around."
It was a minefield of obstacles the crew had to avoid and did.
They had only been using those night vision goggles for about three weeks.
No one was seriously hurt and the helicopter will be fixed.

No word tonight on how long those repairs will take and no names yet of the pilot who was able to make that landing, in the dark, with night vision goggles.
