Charges Rise For Sex Crimes Involving Children

Law enforcement officials say charges of first-degree rape of a child, felony sexual contact with a child and possessing, manufacturing or distributing child pornography have hit a five-year high in the state.

In fiscal year 2009, which ended June 30, South Dakota had 99 charges of first-degree rape of a child, 248 reports of felony sexual contact with a child and 637 alleged instances of possessing, manufacturing or distributing child pornography.

There were 25 child porn convictions in South Dakota during the last fiscal year -- a five year low. Attorney General Marty Jackley says that might be because more federal prosecution for the crimes.

He says it was a focus for him when he was U.S. attorney for South Dakota.

SD Voter- a lot of the pervs arent crusing around sitting at parks anymore, they are using the internet. Just think of it as a different type of patrol. Get those freaks out of here anyway you can!

People who sexually abuse children are incapable of being "cured". Look at the case now evolving in Cleveland. This man served FIFTEEN years and came out worse than ever. I also agree with Amber. Children cannot defend themselves against adult perpetrators and anyone who hurts a child is mentally ill, incapable of being a part of normal society (whatever that is these days).

I am with you guys!! This is just horrible stuff. My only complaint is the blown out law enforcement budgets where we are dumping tons of money into law enforcement to take SFPD's finest and have them surf web chat sites and crap. They have entrapped some pervs no doubt but is it really worth all the cost? These guys are some of the best imagine what they could do on patrol.

The numbers are scary, but at the same time, I am happy that these people are being caught! I wonder how many weren't caught "in the old days". I also think the internet and easy access to this terrible stuff just increases the occurrences. I'm with Amber on the mandatory punishments!

I support Mandatory Life sentences for pedophiles and child molesters and mandatory death for child killers.
