A jury has found a 45-year-old Arizona man guilty of murder in the 2006 death of Vern Jark of Aberdeen. The trial of Gilbert Martinez Sr. began Sept. 28 in Maricopa County, Ariz. Now, the jury will decide whether to impose the death penalty. Jark's daughter, Kristin Hawkins, said the family hopes that phase of the trial will be done by Thanksgiving. Martinez also was convicted of 10 related charges on Tuesday. On April 1, 2006, he and another masked gunman broke into the Sun City, Az., home of Jark's mother-in-law, where Jark and others were staying at the time. The 51-year-old Jark, who was a standout athlete at Northern State University in Aberdeen and later played minor league baseball, was shot while trying to hide his wife.
