South Dakota Native Hid From Ft. Hood Gunman

Candra Calhoon and her 4 kids live on base at Ft. Hood, Texas.

By Brian Allen KSFY

A South Dakota native spent most of Thursday afternoon hiding with her four kids in on-base housing at Fort Hood, Texas.

Her name is Candra Calhoon, she grew up in Chancellor.

Candra Calhoon has spent most of this afternoon living in fear after she received word of a gunman possibly roaming the area near her on base housing.
She has four kids, ages 1 through 8 and did not expect this day to end up like this.

The phone calls and text messages started up at 2 o'clock Thrsday afternoon with word of at least one gunman on base.
One of those text messages ended up hitting the phone of Chancellor, South Dakota native Candra Calhoon, who lives on base at Ft. Hood. "I have heard some sirens go by. I did hear from a friend of mine that they believe there is a gunman in my neighborhood."

Calhoon moved away from the Chancellor area in 2004.
And has lived on base at Fort Hood for a couple of years now and she says she can't believe she has to hide with her four kids in their own home to try and avoid someone with a gun.
Her youngest is 1, her oldest is 8 and she tells me this afternoon, she is telling them the truth about this entire situation. "I am telling them the truth that they...something bad happened here today and it's a very sad situation and they need to stay up here so they can be safe."

It now appears they will be safe.
At last report, all suspected gunmen had been located and accounted for.
Now, Candra has to deal with the aftermath of all this. "It's scary you know even the thought that there might be somebody here is very scary."

Candra was obviously nervous this afternoon but talked with us because she wanted her friends and family to know she was OK.

Candra called me today and the first thing she said to me is get your kids and go upstairs NOW! She is my friend on post and we keep each other informed. Its times like these that you are in shock just like 911.. I got that same feeling. I feel for the families that have lost family members and still continue to have to worry about us here .. where you think you are safe.
