High Water In Claremont Puts Harvest In Jeopardy

Farmers in Claremont are battling water that just won't seem to go away and that's preventing them from harvesting their crops.

Claremont is located 37 miles northeast of Aberdeen.

"It's frustrating. It's the fifth of November. We haven't started. Normally we are finished this time of year."

When Sherm Cutler looks out at his field he sees a lot of water, like many of the farmers in claremont he can't get into his field and harvest.

The county and townships have worked to maintain the roads but some of those efforts have caused additional problems.

"New culverts have gone in. People don't like that because one neighbor gets another neighbor's water. They are not happy about that. With this amount of water it's a problem for everybody."

Especially those who have had to sandbag around their homes with hopes the water level won't get any higher.

At the farmer's elevator the manager,Janelle Swanson, says the corn and soybeans coming in are soggy.

"I've never seen anything like it and I have talked to a number of people who have been in the community for quite some time and nobody has seen anything quite this bad."

The extreme moisture is taking a toll financially.

"Our township is now out of money to fix up and maintain our townships roads. We are not sure what is going to happen."

The county has agreed to re-open some of the roads that are closed because of the water. Farmers are considering trying to get additional financial help from FEMA.
