From Hurricane Victim to Sioux Falls Business Owner

By Jim Nelson

Back in 2005, a category five hurricane named Rita made landfall in the United States, causing extensive damage in Texas and Louisiana. Many lost their homes and were forced to evacuate, some finding their way as far as South Dakota.

The storm claimed the lives of 120 people and caused $10 billion worth of damage. It affected millions more and it was those people who had no idea which direction their life was headed. "After losing all you have, you're kind of physically spent and mentally drained," says Pete Hicks, who came to Sioux Falls from Beaumont, TX.

It has been a long four years, but things are beginning to turn around. In September, Pete opened a hair salon called With These Hands. "I felt somewhat indebted to the community with how they embraced my family and I when I relocated here," Hicks says.

Pete prides himself on helping others. At his salon, he caters to everyone; all races, all social classes. He's even in the process of working with special groups like the battered women's shelter and homeless organizations to provide hair care for them. "To where I could give back to the community the way they gave back to us."

The community has noticed. "His personality...he's very outgoing and very friendly with the customers and with the people he hangs around with," says Michael Lafromboise, or "Big Mike" as he's known at the shop. He says his relationship with Pete expands much beyond his hair. "He's a friend. He's a role model in the community."

"I try to keep it as humble as possible, I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm no bigger, no better than anyone else," Hicks adds.

It’s that humbling attitude that has the community so excited for Pete's success.

If you would like to contribute to the shop and help Pete with his mission to provide hair care for those in need, visit their website by clicking here or give them a call at (888) 371-1753.
